A team of engineers from the University of Glasgow has published a paper saying they have developed an electronic skin that can feel “pain” and could help create a new generation of intelligent robots with human sensitivities. The system mimics the brain’s neural pathways for learning, and robotic hands using smart skin have demonstrated an extraordinary ability to respond to external stimuli. For decades, scientists have been working to create artificial skin with touch sensitivity. A widely explored approach is to distribute an array of contact or pressure sensors on the surface of the electronic skin to allow it to detect when it comes into contact with an object.
However, sensors often generate large amounts of data that can take time to process and respond properly. As a result, delays are induced that reduce the potential effectiveness of the skin in real-world tasks.
To build a synaptic-like electronic skin capable of efficient computation, the researchers printed groups of 168 synaptic transistors made of zinc oxide nanowires directly onto a flexible plastic surface. They then connected synaptic transistors with skin sensors that reside on the palm of the fully articulated humanoid robot. CE Approved Manufacturer of precision metal cutting
When the sensor is touched, it records a change in its resistance—a small change corresponds to a light touch, while a heavier touch produces a larger change in resistance. The input is designed to mimic how sensory neurons work in the human body.
The team used the different outputs of this voltage spike to teach the skin to respond to simulated pain. By setting an input voltage threshold to evoke a response, the team could cause the robot’s hand to back away from a sharp jab in the center of the palm.
