“It’s obviously a bad thing that the robot hurt the boy’s finger,” Sergei Lazarev, head of the Moscow chess federation, told reporters. He said the federation does not actually own The robot, instead, has been rented from operators who appear to have “ignored” the possibility in their safety protocols.

According to reports, the incident occurred during the Moscow Chess Open from July 13 to 20. Video from inside the venue, obtained by the media, showed people around hurriedly helping to free the child from the control of the robotic arm.

“This robot has been playing chess for a long time, about 15 years,” Smarkin said. “This is an extremely rare case, the first in my memory.”
