The idea was born in 2018, when Marco Pavone, director of the Autonomous Systems Laboratory at Stanford University, and his students were brainstorming ideas for Martian cavers.

They knew the robot needed to be able to grab anchors so it could move without falling over—if it couldn’t find enough anchors, it wouldn’t go very far.

One of his students came up with the idea of ​​a small robot with arms that stretched out like a tape measure and could use spider webs like Spider-Man to help him navigate the New York City skyline.
