In 2017, Ray Kurzweil, a well-known futurist and director of engineering at Google, predicted that the “singularity” of human immortality will come in 2045, and nanorobots are a crucial part of it. Because nanorobots can not only deliver medicine precisely, but also “kill the enemy”. In the field of nanorobots, DNA nanorobots play an important role.

Since the concept of DNA nanotechnology was first proposed by the famous American nanoscientist Seeman in 1982, DNA nanomachines have been developing continuously. In 2006, DNA origami was born, bringing new vitality to DNA nanotechnology – DNA origami can assemble DNA into various shapes, and make this DNA assembly move like a train carrying goods . Now, using the DNA origami approach, a research team at the Center for Structural Biology, led by Inserm researcher Gaëtan Bellot, has designed a “nanobot” consisting of three DNA origami structures. Because its size is nanoscale, it is compatible with the size of human cells. It made it possible for the first time to apply and control forces with a resolution of 1 piconewton, or one trillionth of a newton, which is equivalent to the force of a finger clicking a pen. This is the first time a human-made, DNA-based self-assembled object can exert force with such precision.

The researchers combined the robot with a molecule that recognizes mechanoreceptors. This makes it possible for robots to come onto some of our cells and specifically apply forces to targeted mechanoreceptors located on the cell surface to activate them. And when mechanical forces are exerted on our cells on a microscopic scale, they trigger biological signals that are critical to many cellular processes involved in the normal functioning of our bodies or the development of disease.

For example, the sensation of touch depends in part on the mechanical force applied to specific cellular receptors. In addition to touch, these mechanosensitive receptors regulate other key biological processes such as vasoconstriction, respiration, pain perception, and even sound wave detection in the ear. And this dysfunction of cellular mechanosensitivity is implicated in many diseases, including cancer, where cancer cells make sounds and constantly adapt to the mechanical properties of their microenvironment as they migrate in the body. This adaptation is possible because specific forces are detected by mechanoreceptors, which transmit information to the cytoskeleton.

Such tools will help researchers better understand the molecular mechanisms involved in cellular mechanosensitivity and discover new cellular receptors that are sensitive to mechano-forces, exploring broader frontiers for biological sciences. GS Approved Manufacturer of plastic moulding process
