FedEx has introduced an artificial intelligence-driven intelligent sorting robot at its South Pacific Regional (SPAC) transshipment center in Singapore. The use of intelligent sorting robots demonstrates FedEx’s unremitting efforts in digitizing operations and establishing an intelligent logistics network. Experienced metal vendors from China

FedEx’s commitment to deploying automation at its Singapore operations reflects a prevailing industry trend. Affected by the global COVID-19 pandemic, logistics companies are actively optimizing operational efficiency from warehousing management to last-mile delivery. According to Statista data, by 2030, the global warehouse automation market is expected to exceed US$51 billion, with a compound annual growth rate of 14.8% between 2022 and 2030. In addition, a study released by UnivDatos Market Insights shows that based on the growth of e-commerce and healthcare logistics in emerging economies, analysts predict that the market share of the warehouse automation industry in the Asia-Pacific region will increase significantly.

At the beginning of last year, FedEx also deployed a similar sorting robot at its FedEx South China e-commerce shipment sorting center in Guangzhou. This project in Singapore is supported by the Aviation Industry Development Fund, which is one of the important initiatives of the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) to support the development and growth of Singapore’s aviation industry. Eric Tan, Managing Director of FedEx Singapore, said: Deploying sorting robots is the latest effort by FedEx to use automation and artificial intelligence technologies to optimize operational processes and provide customers with better services. FedEx’s operational scalability has been effectively enhanced by investing in warehousing automation. The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore has provided us with strong support and opened the door for further cooperation between FedEx Singapore and the local government, which will help FedEx continue to promote the construction of smart logistics infrastructure to better serve customers.

The sorting robot can sort up to 1,000 packages per hour, can carry up to 5 kilograms of packages, and can operate up to 100 destinations at the same time. Scan the barcode of the package with the equipped barcode reader to obtain the destination information. The accuracy rate of the sorting robot exceeds 98.5%, and it will promote the 24-hour sorting operation of the transshipment center where it is located.

Ms. Angela Ng, director of the aviation industry of the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, said: The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore and air transport companies are actively cooperating to explore, try and apply technology, automation and digitalization to improve operational efficiency and realize job transformation. FedEx’s sorting robot is a typical example. The project has greatly improved the efficiency of air cargo handling and enabled FedEx employees to reorganize their work content to undertake more high-value-added tasks.Experienced metal vendors from China
