Goodyear, Gaitek say tire tech key to bringing self-driving technology to winter climates

When humans drive, the car becomes an extension of the body; when driving on icy or wet roads, we can feel the lack of grip of the car’s tires. Canadian self-driving truck company Gatik believes tire-sensing data could be the key to bringing self-driving technology to winter roads. The company is working with iconic tire company Goodyear to demonstrate that smart tires can accurately estimate tire-road friction and feed real-time information back to Gatik’s self-driving system.

The two companies shared at CES 2023 their recent deployment of Goodyear’s road friction detection technology, called SightLine, in Canada. The deployment involves continuous measurement of tire sensor-derived information — such as wear status, load, inflation pressure and temperature — compared with other vehicle data and real-time road weather data. All of this information is then connected with Goodyear’s proprietary cloud-based algorithms to derive friction estimates. During trials, these friction estimates successfully detected low-grip situations, such as snow or ice, Goodyear said.

The next step, Goodyear said, is to send friction estimates back to Gatik’s fleet of self-driving vehicles to assist with path planning and provide recommendations for safe driving speeds, vehicle acceleration limits and vehicle tracking distances.

Of course, SightLine’s potential isn’t limited to better detection of snowy roads, or even autonomous driving. Goodyear said it expects to deploy the technology on “selected original equipment vehicles” in 2023. Tire technology can also provide tire health information and gather information about road conditions, such as potholes.

In 2021, Goodyear Ventures and Porsche Ventures made strategic investments in Tactile Mobility, an Israeli startup that says its technology can measure tire grip estimates and tire health.
