Scientists use ferromagnetic robots to achieve flexible and efficient automated virus detection

Improving virus diagnostic and surveillance testing capabilities globally is key to epidemic prevention. Recently, a research team from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) published an article entitled “Ferrobotic swarms enable accessible and adaptable automated viral testing” in the journal Nature. This study develops a NAAT-based automated detection platform that can perform programmable liquid handling and bioanalysis operations in parallel in a flexible workflow.

The platform uses a group of millimeter-sized magnets as executive robots (“ferromagnetic robots”), which can precisely manipulate magnetic sample droplets and provide high-fidelity and flexible workflows based on nucleic acid amplification detection. The platform integrates fluidic equipment, hardware and software on a palm-sized printed circuit substrate (PCB), and can simultaneously test 16 samples. After programming the PCB, the entire process including sample transport, liquid separation, mixing, reverse transcription cycle-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) and colorimetric photoelectric detection can be completed in a fully automated manner. Furthermore, to maximize screening efficiency, the researchers built an adaptive detection algorithm based on prevalence. The algorithm can determine the best detection mode and operate the detection process according to the square matrix set scheme, avoiding too cumbersome sample processing procedures. Subsequently, the researchers used virus samples to test the detection performance of the platform and compared it with RT-PCR detection (gold standard), and the results showed that the detection sensitivity of the platform was 98% and the specificity was 100%. The automated virus detection platform developed in this study can significantly increase the detection speed and throughput, while the reduction in the cost of instruments and reagents makes the large-scale production and rapid deployment of the platform possible, expanding the detection capacity for epidemic prevention and providing better Prepare for future pandemics.
