The International Space Station starts construction in the new year, and microgravity research leads the annual research work

The Expedition 68 crew kicked off the new year with a series of microgravity studies aboard the International Space Station designed to support future crews far from Earth. Seven on-orbit crews from the United States, Japan and Russia explored a variety of phenomena, including space nutrition, dexterous manipulation and microbial samples collected from orbiting laboratories. Adequate nutrition for the crew is critical as NASA and its international partners plan expeditions to the Moon, Mars and elsewhere. BioNutrients-2 research is using genetically engineered microbes to deliver nutrients, and potentially other compounds and drugs, on demand in space. NASA flight engineer Nicole Mann nourished and incubated genetically engineered yeast samples for the study at the Space Automated Bioproducts Laboratory on Tuesday.

How humans adapt to the lack of up and down reference points in weightlessness is also important as researchers study how astronauts grasp and manipulate objects. NASA flight engineer Josh Kasada sat himself in a dedicated chair in the Columbus Experiment Module and used a controller device to perform different tasks. Scientists are using observations to design smart spacecraft interfaces that will benefit future astronauts as they venture into deep space to visit planets, moons and asteroids. Understanding the microbial environment of the space station is another important activity to ensure the health and safety of the crew and successful missions. NASA flight engineer Frank Rubio analyzed microbial samples collected from the space station’s atmosphere and surface Tuesday morning, grown in an incubator. The samples will be returned to Earth next week on SpaceX’s Dragon cargo spacecraft for further analysis. Roscosmos flight engineers Dmitry Petrin and Anna Kiina performed their own analysis on another set of microbial samples, adding to the knowledge of how bacteria and fungi adapt and grow in microgravity.

Koichi Wakata, a flight engineer at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), tends research samples being observed to understand bone regeneration on Earth and in space. Wakata later took a robotic test on a computer that measured his performance, behavior and cognition while living in space. Space Station Commander Sergei Prokopyev from Roscosmos has built an experimental 3D printer to demonstrate the ability to print parts and tools that support spacecraft and space habitat maintenance.

The spacewalk was ultimately delayed by 24 hours so that the orbiting laboratory’s ISS Progress 81 cargo spacecraft could fire up its engines, steer the station and avoid an approaching piece of rocket debris.
