Nippon Steel has a history of more than 100 years since its establishment, but this century-old company has repeatedly exposed quality inspection violation scandals this year. On the 14th, the latest investigation report released by Nippon Steel said that a subsidiary in Hokkaido had 449 violations such as data falsification in the quality inspection process. The relevant problems can be traced back to at least 1998, with a time span of 24 years .
Violations mainly include: modifying or even fabricating quality inspection data, quality inspection process that does not comply with regulations, and concealment of test values that do not meet customer needs, etc. The products involved include a variety of steel and mechanical products, most of which are used in thermal power plants, and 20 quality inspection violations involved nuclear power plants. Among them, one case was supplied to Japanese domestic nuclear power plants for the storage of radioactive waste container bottom plates, and the remaining 19 involved products were supplied to foreign nuclear power plants. In May and August this year, the subsidiaries involved successively revealed that there were falsified quality inspection data for steel products such as parts and components used in thermal power plant generators and turbines.
On further investigation, more violations of this announcement were discovered. Although Nippon Steel claimed that the products involved had no quality problems, the company’s stock price was still under attack. Since the scandal was first exposed in May this year, the stock price once fell by more than 30%. Affected by a series of irregularities and scandals, the profits of Japanese steel companies fell by about 70% in the first half of this year.
